Documentaries

10/19/2020

I’ve always enjoyed documentaries for as long as I can remember. The year 2020 has afforded me the opportunity to watch quite a few ones. I wanted to share with you a few of those that I found to be the most interesting.

1. The Social Dilemma goes behind the scenes of social media, and how it influences the lives of its users, and the world at large. Several people who helped start various social media platforms are interviewed, and talk about how it really works, and how things have changed since they were first created.

2. Crip Camp tells the story of how one summer camp for teens with disabilities sparked a movement, that eventually led to the Americans with Disabilities Act getting passed. I hadn’t known much about the ADA before watching this, and it’s interesting as this is a fairly recent act.

3. Street Food: Latin America/ Asia tells the stories street vendors from various countries on these two continents. If you love food, and love travel, then you’ll definitely want to check this out!

4. Three Identical Strangers was definitely a unique one! It’s on three identical triplets all adopted separately as babies. They had no idea they were triplets until they were adults. This documentary talks about how they found each other, and the looming dark secrets behind their separation.

5. Down to Earth with Zac Efron was surprisingly enjoyable for me. Zac travels to various countries with his friend Darien Olien, a health guru, in search of countries practicing better sustainable living. They travel to Iceland, France, Costa Rica, Sardinia, Lima, Puerto Rico, and Iquitos.

6. This documentary written by James Baldwin, and is an unfinished book entitled: Remember This House. This is about race in America, and Baldwin’s relationship with Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King.

7. The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo documents a mother’s fight for justice over the murder of her daughter. This documentary highlights corrupt politics police forces, and a system that failed to deliver justice.

All of these can be found on Netflix, EXCEPT for Three Identical Strangers, I found that one on Hulu. In the comments below, let me know what you have been watching lately.
